The original owner of this painting was Mina Boehm Metzger, an artist who studied art as part of her early education but did not receive any formal training until she was an adult. On her many trips to Europe, Metzger became fascinated by Impressionism and back in New York enrolled in art classes at Grand Central School of Art. It was here that she met Arshile Gorky, who was teaching at the time, and although Metzger was a student of his, she and her husband became some of Gorkys most ardent patrons. For a time she and Gorky shared adjoining studio space in Union Square, New York. Metzger exhibited her paintings at Betty Parsons Gallery in New York in 1940, and at other New York Gallery into the 1950s and for many years she encouraged and helped young painters and continued an active interest in art and artists even after having to stop painting due to failing eyesight.
Work needs to be relined as shown upper right etc.
