US 1883 Five Cents - V "No Cents" on reverse - in coin holder - Over 140 year old coin
● Year - 1883
● Mint - Philadelphia
● Condition (Non grading service rating) - Fine
Charles Barber's famed Liberty Head nickel was first issued in 1883, with a large Roman numeral V (five) on the reverse – but not the word "cents."
Soon, con artists discovered that when gold plated, the coins could easily be passed off to unsuspecting merchancts as $5 gold pieces.
The word cents was soon added to the reverse, and these one-year-only 1883 No Cents nickels became instant collector items.
