Washi is the paper made by craftsmen in Japan since the 7th century, Unesco inscribed washi in 2014 on the representative list of the intangible heritage of humanity.
There are more than four hundred kinds, with various patterns and colors, which are used to write cards or invitations, cover boxes or even make packaging, announcements, lampshades or kites. But it can also be used to create utensils, including bowls, by covering it with lacquer, umbrellas in the perilla oil coating, the i mperméables ( Kamiko ), lanterns ( Chochin ), lamps ( andon ), fans ( uchiwa or sensu ).
The most famous fibers used bear the names of kozo, gampi and mitsumata . Each of them gives the paper specific characteristics.
