Amazing Native American Bronze Medicine Bag With 3 Silver Finished Figures

Amazing Native American bronze medicine bag by Gordon Van Wert. This detailed sculpture features 3 silver finished turtle, eagle and Indian warrior coming out of a bronze medicine bag with a leather strap. Marked GVW 80. This is a smaller version of a bronze sculpture located at the North County Health Services in Bemidiji , Minnesota. In very good used condition with minor age-appropriate patina and wear as shown. About the Artist: Gordon Van Wert is a Native American Indigenous Art artist who was born in 1952. Gordon Van Wert's work has been offered at auction multiple times. Among the artist's sold works is "Tobacco Power", which realized $137 USD at Heritage Auctions, Dallas in 2012. From an excerpt in Indian Country Today from 2008: “Art is a healing thing,” said sculptor Gordon Van Wert. Sculpting carried the 56-year-old member of the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians through his tedious recovery from a paralyzing stroke. Forty years earlier, the chance to take art classes had whisked him off the South Minneapolis streets that were leading to a dead end. Now the four-foot carving that took shape during his stroke rehabilitation, “Medicine Bag” is an inspirational centerpiece at North Country Health Services in Bemidji, Minn. Not only does it stand for determination, but both sides of the sculpture hold symbolism that was meaningful to his healing journey. He hopes it will lift the spirits of others.
