Beautiful mahogany breakfront in very good condition. Cabinet-maker made, the craftmanship on this
piece is exquisite.
This elegant two-piece mahogany and walnut breakfront was made by Schmieg & Kotzian, among the
finest handmade furniture makers in our nation’s history. The workmanship is of the highest quality and
no expense was spared in materials.
Both Karl Schmieg and Heinrich Kotzian were German cabinet makers trained in the traditional
European apprentice system. Schmieg & Kotzian was based in London from 1899 to 1907. They moved to New York in 1907 and remained in operation until after Karl Schmieg died in 1949. Their factory was on East 72nd Street for many years, and their showroom was in mid-town. In 1925, Karl Schmieg was
one of the U.S. representatives at the Art Deco exhibit in Paris.
The top portion of the breakfront has a decorative carved cornice with contrasting key inlay. There are
four glazed doors with carved tracery. These doors each open to three adjustable shelves with incised
plate rails.
The lower piece has three useful felt-lined, divided silverware drawers located over four pullout serving
shelves. The two center doors open to three drawers and are flanked by two additional doors that open
onto single shelf storage compartments. The base features beautiful crotch mahogany veneer drawer
fronts with carved borders and heavy brass pulls. The crotched mahogany is also on the door fronts and
is accented with applied decorative borders and corner rosettes. A single, original key locks all doors.
The piece is marked:
