Vintage Swank Fleur De Lis Cufflinks (Regency Collection)

The company that made Swank products was founded as Attleboro Manufacturing Company in 1897 by Samuel Stone and Maurice Baer. The business, located in Attleboro, Massachusetts, became Swank Products, Inc. in 1936. The name changed again to Swank, Inc. in 1941, but the Swank moniker was used in advertising as early as 1927.

The original Attleboro Manufacturing Company concentrated on women’s jewelry until 1908 when they added the subsidiary to produce men’s accessories. One of their early successes in the men’s realm was the Kum-a-Part snap button cufflink, which redirected the company’s focus to men’s items in the late 1920s. Interestingly, the business was also known for making dog tags and identification chains for the American military as well as various medals such as Bronze Stars and Purple Hearts.

During the 1950s and ‘60s, the company sold many boxed sets of men’s jewelry items, many of which are still found in the original packaging today. They added leather goods such as belts and other personal leather accessories to their lines during the ‘50s as well. They acquired several companies to successfully further this segment of business in the 1960s and ‘70s.

Swank reentered the women’s jewelry market by introducing Biagi by Swank in 1975. The Swank factory also manufactured jewelry and accessories branded Pierre Cardin in conjunction with the Biagi division of the business. Swank manufactured jewelry for Anne Klein in the 1980s and Guess branded jewelry and leather accessories were added to their output in the 1990s. At it's peak, the business employed 1,500 people.

After a period of sluggish sales and reorganization through the 1990s, Swank Inc. was acquired by Randa Accessories in 2012. The Swank brand was discontinued after that.
