Item Description

The pencil is UNTESTED!

Eversharp is an American brand name of mechanical pencils, manufactured under contract with Heath and later Wahl. Charles Rood Keeran founded Eversharp and marketed the brand via Keeran & Company, a Chicago based firm.

The Eversharp brand was expanded to include pens when the Wahl-Eversharp Company was formed in the late 1920s and then changed to Eversharp after 1941.

Initially, Charles Rod Keeran from Bloomington, Illinois, worked for the Bloomington Pickle Company and then J. F. Funk to manufacture White Crown Mason jar lids.

Keeran obtained a patent on October 10, 1913, for a mechanical pencil and signed a contract with the Health Corporation in New Jersey to manufacture his mechanical pencils. The mechanical pencil was test-marketed at Wanamaker’s in New York City during the 1913 Christmas season. After returning to Bloomington, Keeran established Keeran & Company in 1914.

In 1915, Keeran relocated his operation to Chicago and signed a contract with the Wahl Adding Machine Company to manufacture his pencils. Wahl took control of Keeran’s company in November 1915 in exchange for an infusion of cash. By the end of 1916, Wahl owned the company outright, and Keeran was gone by 1917.

In 1917, Wahl purchased the Boston Fountain Pen Company to gain entry into the fountain pen marketplace. Wahl used its name for the fountain pen brand and the Eversharp name for its pencils. The Eversharp pencil was a success with over 12 million sold by 1921.

In 1922, Wahl acquired a plant to produce hard rubber tubes, a mistake given the market shift to celluloid tubes that occurred shortly after that.

In 1929, Wahl renamed its company Wahl-Eversharp, using the name on its pencils and pens. In 1941, Wahl was dropped from the title.

Eversharp remained a significant player in the 1940s, but began its decline in the 1950s. Attempts to enter the ballpoint pen market failed. In 1967, Parker Pen acquired the Wahl-Eversharp trademarks. Within a few years, production ceased.

Syd Saperstein in the United States and Emmanuel Caltagirone in Italy made an effort to revive Wahl-Eversharp in 2004. In 2012, they acquired the rights to the Wahl-Eversharp trademarks. The company is a subsidiary of Pensbury Manor LLC, an Arizona company.
