Signed RB98, this charcoal & graphite portrait ticks all the boxes that lead me to believe it was created at the end of the 19th century.
The gentleman’s short hair, pointed beard, pince-new glasses, hat and frock coat are all appropriate to the period.
The flat planar composition foreshadows the cubist work that would follow in the early 20th century.
I’m fascinated by the artist’s choice to place the buildings in the background, clearly Eastern European, but hardly representative of a specific place.
I think this could be contemporary, done in 1998 - in the style of 100 years prior. The painted white frame is obviously m=not original.
Either way, this is a great looking piece or original art.
