Asian scroll - possibly Chinese, hand painted folk art, made of handmade paper with wooden rods at top and bottom, string at top for hanging, unsigned, undated.
This is an unusual piece that was found sealed up in a frame since 1996. Someone had it framed for protection that year (not a great frame - so it wasn’t kept). I removed it for better examination.
It depicts a scene that may be from a folk tale. Notice that the men on the right are wearing hats that indicate a higher class or position. Yellow clothing is supposed to be for royalty. The mast flags are ornate, but I cannot find what they mean, nor can I identify the mast head.
It could be old or possibly just from the 20th century. Please view the photos for details of the condition. It was displayed a long time on a wall before it was put in a frame and preserved.
It certainly is an interesting piece that would be fun to do research on and continue to conserve for the future.
Notes: Little holes, chipping, pest damage, no stains, no odours, still fairly bright.
Consistent with age and use.
