In 1946, Salvador Dalí met Walt Disney at a dinner party which eventually resulted in a contract for a short six-minute animated film. This film titled Destino was part of what was called a package film--one made from a series of short episodes for general theater release.
The central figure of the ballerina is based on the “girl-skipping-rope” image that was derived from a familiar belltower Dalí saw as a child. Several of his paintings from the mid-30’s utilize this transforming image. In this sketch, the “girl” now becomes a ballerina poised on the horizon. In Dalí’s “baseball ballet,” she appears between the batter and catcher with her head representing a baseball. By using the American theme of baseball, Dalí thought he could introduce more people to the concept of Surrealism.
