Item Description

Very fine original Japanese Meiji Period netsuke, signed by noted period artist KUNIMITSU. Subject is a cooper/ barrel maker at work, with mallet and chisel in hand, a barrelheld in place with his feet. The level of detail is fantastic, from the grain of the wood on the barrel to the musculature in his forearms, and ornately adorned clothing. Kunimitsu even added a tobacco pouch sinched to his obi [belt], with a charming OKAME MASK tethering it in place. Dates to the last quarter of the 19th century. This is a wonderful period carving, in excellent condition. Signature in red lacquer placard on underside of sculpt.

Please note- netsuke were affixed to the carrier's obi, with a cord running through the himotoshi [cord holes in back]. Held money or an inro [sectioned box] in place. Finer carvings were a symbol of status in Japanese culture. This is a very fine example. His works have sold in excess of $2000-
