Scully & Scully opened its doors in 1934, aspiring to provide the world's finest home furnishings and gifts in a gracious atmosphere. This vintage stunning secretary’s desk (circa 2001) purchased from Scully & Scully's New York City store is simply beautiful - we are simply WOWED by the burr yew wood grains and details. Handcrafted and complete with original hardware and key. This desk has a fold down writing surface with pull out support loafers and multiple drawers making it very functional as well as attractive. Features include beautiful match crotch veneer wood grain displays, wood inlays on the slant front desk door, five graduating lower half drawers (2 are half- width drawers), upper adjustable shelves inside the glass cabinet doors with cover wood fret work design, a lovely top broken arched crown with finial, and numerous interior storage pigeon holes flanking a center cabinet ( 1 cabinet; 8 storage cubbies / shelves; & 2 small drawers). Handcrafted mahogany and mahogany veneer Secretary Bookcase boasts heavily grained & detailed Burr Yew wood veneers in grand display! The upper section includes a glass door with lock and a top broken pediment with finial. The lower half of this grand bookcase contains five drawers- (2 half- wide drawers over 3 full- width drawers) in graduating heights. Yew is used for quality furniture and woodworking projects as if it were a hardwood because Yew is one of the few conifers which has a timber hard and dense enough. Its annual growth rings are so tight that it is usually harder and heavier than your average hardwood. Yew trees often contort in their growth pattern, particularly common with older trees. Knots and splits are typical, hence we usually offer yew with waney edges, as suits a character timber. Pipp (small cats paw arrangements of burr) is common and an attractive feature. Sometimes ( it's rare but seen in this Secretary) we class very extensive pipp as ‘Burr’ or ‘Burry’.
