Colorful surrealist painting by listed artist John Shayn. Signed lower right.
He was born Jacob Sheinfine in 1901 in the Ukraine and brought to Chelsea, Massachusetts by his family as an infant. His first language was Yiddish. He studied at Boston University and then moved to New York City in the 1920's where he worked as a graphic artist and type designer. His exhibits of painting and sculpture at the Arthur U. Newton Gallery were reviewed in the New York Times. He experimented with surrealism.
In middle age he studied print-making at The Art Students League and issued a series of lithographs and etchings based on his biblical paintings. His wife, Florence Gordon, exhibited his work at her exclusive clothing shop opposite the Plaza Hotel. He met Frank Lloyd Wright while Mrs. Wright shopped at the Florence Gordon Studio Shop, painted their portraits, and was their guest at the opening of the Guggenheim Museum. During summer vacations, he painted in Woodstock, New York, Provincetown, Massachusetts, and Rockport, Massachusetts.
