These richly colored pieces were designed by Raphael Bordallo Pinheiro (1846-1905), who was primarily a cartoonist and illustrator. Since his death in 1905, his company continued to produce quality Majolica plate ware. Majolica is a type of glazed jewel-toned pottery associated with Spain, Italy and Mexico. The process of making it includes applying a special enamel to a fired piece of earthenware.
