Estate Fresh Oil on Canvas Painting of Gloucester Harbor by well listed artist Oscar Anderson. The Oil painting depicts the coastal town of Gloucester with multiple ships the the harbor foreground. Anderson's use of light and color are exceptional. The painting is signed in the lower right corner. The painting is titled in pencil on the back of the stretcher 'In the Harbor Gloucester'. The painting measures 16" by 24". This wonderful seascape is fresh from an estate and is ready for a new home.
A painter and photographer, Oscar Anderson was born in Gotland, Sweden and emigrated to the United States where he settled in Connecticut and studied art with Charles Noel Flagg in Hartford.
In 1908, Anderson moved to Gloucester, Massachusetts and was a leader in the Cape Ann Art Colony, working in his home studio at Highlands Court and running a gallery on Rocky Neck Avenue.
He was the first vice president of the Gloucester Society of Artists in 1922 when it formed, and then served for many years as president. He was also a founding member of the North Shore Arts Association and the Boston Art Club and was founder of the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts. During the 1930s, he did numerous WPA murals.
