This is a VERY early example, circa 1830 and meant to house whale oil [when whale blubber was used as a fuel to light homes ar night]. It has its' original 2-prong top, meant to hold wicks that fed into the oil housed in the base via a wet wick. It is a superb primitive lamp, in very good condition. Not many around!
