Item Description

July 11, 1945 Three World War II First Day Of Issue U. S. Postage 3 Cents "Iwo Jima" Stamped Envelopes & six marines "Flag Raisers" Photo Cards. This rare collection embodies the historical significance of the raising of the U.S. flag on Mt. Suribachi.
A total of 13 stamps are on the three Post Office "Fighting Marines & Marines' Hymn" envelopes.
*** The creator of this framed collection put this together before the true identities of all six of the marines was discovered (corrected) by historians:
PFC RENE A GAGNON was actually Marine Cpl. Harold P. Keller.
Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class JOHN H BRADLEY was actually Pfc. Harold Schultz.
A first day of issue cover is a postage stamp on a cover, a post card, or on an envelope franked on the first day of issue. They include a cancelled - timed and dated, hand done postmark- which shows they can't be re-used to send a letter. Circular Date Stamps are the "bread and butter" postmarks used on everyday mail by Post Office counter. All three of these U.S. Marines raising the U.S. Flag at "Iwo Jima" have the full postmark that includes "First Day of Issue".
This framed collage was created post-war as one of the six Marine photos reads he died in 1955 and another in 1979.
DIMENSIONS: 17" wide X 15" tall X 7/8" thick. With original hanging wire still on the backside. The envelopes are 9 1/2" wide X 4 1/2" tall. The photographs are 3 3/4" tall X 2 1/2" wide.
CONDITION: OVERALL IN GOOD CONDITION. NO CHIPS, CRACKS to the Frame Glass. The backside is papered with just a few small thumb-pressed breaks. Dusty from storage. PLEASE SEE MY PHOTOS FOR DETAILS OF THE GREAT CONDITION.
