“The Hay Wain” is a landscape painting by John Constable. It is part of the artist’s six footers series, which is a collection of large-scale paintings made for summer exhibitions at the Royal Academy. It depicts a simple but lush rural scenery, featuring the River Sour, situated between the English counties of Essex and Suffolk. The central figures of the painting are three horses pulling a wood wain across the river. It is considered as Constable’s most popular painting and named as one of the greatest English paintings of all time.
