Item Description

Born in 1960, Basquiat was part of a few movements in his time. Neo-Expressionism, primitivism, post-punk, and street art movements were just a few he was mostly known for in the late 70’s early 80’s. He was an American artist, musician, and producer. He exhibited his work in galleries while also living as a graffiti artist through SAMO in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, New York City. He touched on subjects such as segregation/integration and poverty/wealth. He had a close friendship with Andy Warhol and after Warhol died Basquiat became isolated and depressed. His addiction to Heroin became worse and by the age of 27 he died of an overdose in his studio in NYC.

Self Portrait with a Heel contains many different themes Basquiat is known for. The human figure, primitive, dreadlocks, exposed teeth, is a key element in his work. The tribal primitive look or African mask could suggest to healing in tribal rituals. The word “heel” also alluding to “heal” as a misspelled word. During his time there were inner-city race riots and so through many paintings he expresses himself questioning what it meant to be an American. Basquiat was influenced by many artists including Pablo Picasso. “Ace Combs” written in the portrait comes from a comb manufacturer in which he places under his dreadlocks as though he is referring to his own trademark of his locks.
