Notes: PHILIP EVERGOOD- Original Lithograph Titled "THE RETURN OF THE PRODIGAL" 1965 PHILIP EVERGOOD (1901-1973)- Noted artist selling well in ti $300-400 range. He was a leading American modernist painter and printmaker of the 20th Century. Along with Ben Shahn, he is considered one of the finest social realists of his time. Evergood was born in New York City with the name Philip Blashki. His family moved to London in 1909 and there he studies at Eton and Cambridge University. When he returned to New York in 1923, he was a student of George Luks at the Art Student's League. In the early 20's, he traveled to Paris and studied art at the Academie Julian. He was especially influenced by the Spanish painter El Greco. In the 1930's, he worked as a muralist for the W.P.A. in the Federal Arts Project. He was very politically active during his life. Early in his career, he focused on many Biblical themes but in the 30's and 40's his works were dominated by political and social themes, especially reflecting the unhappiness of people caught in the Great Depression. His works can be found in many important collections including The Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Boston Museum of Fine Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
