Item #1525086
Lot #6 of 165
Item Description

Fine antique estimated 1900-1920 English style oak campaign chest, likely used as a writing box, featuring a hinged lid revealing a desk type compartment with two drawers below, all finished in quarter sawn "tiger" oak with solid brass hardware fittings set on a short stand (for placing on a table or bureau top). The wood bears the worn patina of age but the quality of construction is apparent in the dovetailed joints.
Campaign style furniture was used for travel and is commonly associated with British military campaigns when the British Empire rose and expanded in the 18th and 19th centuries. In the Georgian and Victorian periods (1714–1901), British officers of high social position often carried high-quality portable furniture. The campaign furniture was therefore designed to be easily packed up and carried on the march. Who knows, perhaps this chest saw battle in World War I.

Notes: The dovetail joinery at the back of the box has started to give and can become disjointed, so care must be taken when opening the hinged lid top. The piece shows the wear of age and use. It is possible the stand it is mounted on is not original to the piece.

Condition

Consistent with age and use.
