N.B. Hong Yuan Xu was born in the Jilin province of Outer Mongolia, and studied at the state-run Soon Bin School of Art, and the University of China, where he graduated with a fine arts degree. He initially worked a number of jobs including as a leather crafts designer and police officer, until he eventually relocated to the United States in 1989, in order to pursue a career as a professional artist.
