This Silver Plate Brides Basket # 3715 was made by the Barbour Silver Plate International Company. The International Silver Company was formed in 1898 and immediately upon organization acquired several silver companies among them being the Barbour Silver Company, the William Rogers Company and several other Rogers companies. This piece was made by the Barbour Silver Plate Company Circa 1910. This piece is part of a line of Dutch reproductions made by Barbour using a process called "copper deposit" in which an impression was made in wax, and the wax was then coated with copper. The wax was then melted and the piece was plated with silver. The piece has a very intricate design depicting various scenes of daily living. It is design number 3715 and is entitled "Wedding Basket." Dutch Repousse is romantic, sensual, flirtatious, and sexy.
The challenge of finding the perfect wedding gift plagues many wedding guests today, but this was less so in the 19th century, when a bride’s basket was the go-to gift. Extremely popular in the 1880s as a luxury gift for a bride on her wedding day, bride’s baskets were an elegant way to express beauty, love, and graciousness.
