Details about the original owner: It belonged to the seller's father, C.J. Nester, Jr. He was in the field artillery, starting with ROTC training at the University of Illinois, where they trained on horseback. The seller believes he received the sword at that time. He shipped out in June, 1942, first to England, and then landing in North Africa and Sicily, where he led an artillery battery, rising to the rank of Captain and firing one of the first artillery volleys into the continent of Europe. He came home in the summer of 1944, having reached the Arno. As a young captain, just 25, less than six months into command, he knew when it was time to leave his position to direct the rescue of his wounded men. As the citation for his Silver Star reads “ Captain Genster proceeded to calm and assist in caring for the wounded, bringing in stretcher bearers, and assisting in removing the casualties from the area. By his initiative and outstanding courageous action, Captain Genster succeeded in preventing undue loss of both men and valuable government property, and won the unqualified respect and admiration of all those who served in his command”. It is believe that his unit was Field Artillery 155.
