An antique ca. 1860 English figured walnut ‘Davenport’ desk. A Davenport desk, is a small desk with an inclined lifting desktop attached with hinges to the back of the body. This desk owes its name to a Captain Davenport who was the first to commission the design from Gillows of Lancaster in the 18th century. Fitted with four graduated drawers to one side with opposing false drawers, the green leather top with gold gilt border opens to reveal smaller drawers, with the top back having a further fitted lidded compartment. Inlaid with contrasting stringing and floral motifs in fruitwood.

Condition: very good with general wear associated with age.
