Antique 14kt Gold Lion Head Ring By Clark & Coombs Company (3.73 Grams)

This lot is for an antique 14kt gold lion head ring by Clark & Coombs Company. The ring weighs approximately 3.73 grams or 2.4 dwt (pennyweight). The stones in the ring have not been tested.

The stamp/mark on the inside of the ring (two letter C's enclosed inside triangles on each side of the ampersand) was used until 1915 by the Clark & Coombs Company.

Clark & Coombs was established in 1872. The company started out as a burnisher and finisher for a large silver company in North Attleboro, Massachusetts. Upon moving to Providence, Rhode Island, they had built a national reputation for manufacturing gold and silver rings by the early twentieth century. By mid-century, however, production had dropped sharply due to antiquated machinery and inefficient management practices. In 1946 the business reorganized, and under the management of a new president and veteran jewelry manufacturer, Vita Cameglia, Clark & Coombs increased production by 100 percent within a 7 year period. The company further expanded after the purchase of jewelry tools and dies from the Ostby &. Barton Company, which, upon leaving it's Richmond Street factory for a new Warwick factory, continued only it's precision-tool production. The Clark & Coombs Company still occupied this structure as of 2007, along with the Clark & Coombs Realty Company. Upon further research, it appears that Clark & Coombs dissolved in 2013.
