Item Description

This Smithsonian project had Tobey portraying the lengths to which people from China to the Congo to the modern cosmetic surgery lab and tattoo parlor are willing to go to adorn their bodies. These people want to “stand in” and “stand out” at the same time. They want to stand into their own groups and stand out from other groups. Tobey observed in what seems an almost prescient comment on today’s obsession with body art and piercing.

The Color piece is an oil sketch on velum and has a 5'' tear that is invisible from a 3ft viewing distance. These studies are as; if not more important to the piece than the piece itself. This is where the artists brainchild works and explores, creates and problem solves. It is a fundamental and necessary exercise that is rarely seen by the public let alone offered on the open market.
