Item Description

Lightly circulated with handwritten notes on backside
Historic Artifacts of World War II:
These notes were issued to troops after the landing in Sicily the night of July 9, 1943 as a means of controlling local currency in the newly liberated area. The Italian government capitulated to the Allies on September 3, 1943. Five days later, on September 8, Hitler launched Operation Axis, the occupation of Italy, and German troops entered Rome. The next day the Allies launched Operation Avalanche and the war on the Italian peninsula continued until the end of World War II.

These notes were printed in the United States and displays the “Four Freedoms” of Speech, Religion, Freedom from Want, and the Freedom from Fear. More than 75 years old, this vintage WWII-era note will make an outstanding addition to anyone’s wartime collection of coins and currency.
