Item Description

Civil war cavalry dragoon sword manufactured by Ames Mfg. Co. of Chicopee, Massachusetts in 1864.
The blade is properly stamped with the Ames Mfg. Co. Chicopee, MA on one side by the hilt and the other side is stamped U.S. with G.W.S. 1864 under it. Sword measures 40" L.

Ames Manufacturing Company was a manufacturer of swords, tools and cutlery in Chicopee, Massachusetts, as well as an iron and bronze foundry. They were a major provider of side arms, swords, light artillery, and heavy ordnance for the Union in the American Civil War. They also cast a number of bronze statues which can be found throughout New England. wikipedia.com
