Item Description

Folded single sheet of paper on Boston University College of Liberal Arts letterhead (Watermarked Vienna Linen with company logo atop, deckled). Written to the Editor of The Boston Evening Transcript asking to review another conservationist’s work ‘Mr. Burroughs’ “Far and Near” for the paper as he owes this friend and author a return favor. Clean crisp handwriting, folds with some edge tones and stains, one old repair at the edge of a fold with pencil notations on the reverse but otherwise very good condition. Estimate: $200 to $300 as Professor Sharp’s autographs are somewhat rare. 11 by 8.5 inches unfolded.
Dallas Lore Sharp (1870-1929); Born in Haleyville, New Jersey; Died in Boston, Massachusetts 1929. Sharp’s Alma mater was Brown University (B.A., 1895) and Boston University School of Theology (S.T.B., 1899). Married to Grace Hastings with four sons and a daughter, Waitstill Sharp.
Dallas Lore Sharp (1870–1929) was an American author and university professor, born in the Haleyville section of Commercial Township, in Cumberland County, New Jersey. He graduated at Brown University in 1895, served as a Methodist Episcopal minister for four years, and graduated at the Boston University School of Theology in 1899. He was assistant librarian (1899–1902), assistant professor of English (1902–09), and thereafter professor at Boston University.

As a writer he became known through his charming magazine articles on native birds and small mammals and for his books. However, he is also known for his early work on nature conservation and had ties with the likes of the leading conservationists and naturalists of his time. Including Theodore Roosevelt.
