Milk glass amphora vase in pink color with white interior and applied decorative motifs. H: 5 1/4". CIRCA: 18th to late 19th Century?
ORIGIN: England?
The remains of what appears to be a label or hallmark of the manufacturer with the number ‘58’ inscribed on the piece.
The piece is 5 inches tall, 3.5 inches wide, a lip of 2 inches and base of 1.75 inches. It has ground pontil remains, so it is hand blown. Starting with a pinkish glass at the top on a white glass, thinning as it proceeds downward to the base, nearly disappearing.
Under visible light, no additional marks can be found but under UV light it appears there are the remains of a manufacturer’s seal that has been worn off over time. The process then included the addition of white glass on the surface in a design pattern and appears to be a ‘porcelaneous’ like material. It is worn off in several spots, indicating that the piece is or was used frequently and is older than what most have considered as early 20th century.
It also luminesces a dark pinkish color and the surface added material remains somewhat white and not the same texture as the inner white glass. A rare item as no references for this type of glass work has been found.
While Thomas Webb might be a candidate, others experimented with porcelain-like materials on the surface of glasses.
