A Franked letter dated February 5, 1833, from James Loring to Reverend John C. Welsh of Warren Rhode Island.
James Loring is replying to a letter he received from the Reverend John C. Welsh from Warren Rhode Island apparently complaining about a publication in the Christian Watchman about Father Borden, who had passed away. Welsh was apparently complaining that the information printed in the Watchman by Loring was false and misleading. Loring counters by saying that he received a letter from a Brother Miner, that stated what was printed in the Watchman by Loring and that he had Miner’s assertion, in writing, that it was true and that he, Miner wanted it published as such.
Loring goes on to tell Welsh to contact Miner directly and ask him about what was published. Single letter, toned with tears at the seal, not affecting text.
James Loring (1770 - 1850); "Educated in the printing offices of Powars and Willis and Major Benjamin Russell, he early imbibed patriotic principles, which he has always evinced. He was for 55 years a printer and bookseller, and was the first editor of the Christian Watchman, and was publisher of the Massachusetts State Register from 1800 to 1848."
Loring took on some controversial subjects by being the publisher of works such as:
Memoir of Mrs. Chloe Spear, a Native of Africa, Who was Enslaved in Childhood, and Died in Boston, January 3, 1815...Aged 65 Years. By a Lady of Boston; Brown, Rebecca Warren; Boston: Published by James Loring, 1832. 108 p.
Notes: Tear from seal but not effecting text or letter, toned, spots and fold creases, pencil notations, see photos
