Item Description

Transfer of land from Joseph Hoild to Samuel Stansfield along with Stansfield’s promise, witnessed by an unknown hand, possibly Ranson or Ravson with first name possibly being Lester or Chester W? Measures 7.75 by 7 inches. Soiling of the edges, stains, with fold marks. Dated 20th of February 1700.
Hoild or Hold family name is possibly derived from the name of Hugo de Holte who was a Knights Templar in Kent in 1185 and later Simon del Holt was listed in the Pipe Rolls for Warwickshire in 1230. The old German name is Hölde or Höld or Hölt. Additional variations can include English: status name a Middle English descendant of late Old English hold (Old Norse Hǫldr) which within the Danelaw (the region of pre-conquest England where Danish rule and custom was dominant) was a rank of feudal nobility immediately below that of earl.
Stansfield’s of Yorkshire later were coal barons and this promise maybe related to the mining of coal? Script is difficult to read and mixes old English vernacular with a handwriting style for letters that is hard to interpret accurately. From the 14th Century, many coal mines opened in Yorkshire, especially around Barnsley, Rotherham, and Sheffield. Coalfields had been laid down here between 290 and 354 million years ago and there were potentially many more coal seams throughout Yorkshire.
Stansfield, of Bradford in Yorkshire; bears for arms, Vert, a Chevron between three Goats Passant, Argent.
Samuel Stansfield, Esq of Bradford (b.ca.1648-died Sep 1727)
In the succeeding volumes of the registers, the Stansfeld entries are very numerous; but as they are of such recent dates, they thereby lose their interest, unless they apply to members of the family, mentioned in the pedigrees. But, as will be seen hereafter, the Sowerby branch of the family seems to have monopolized all the attention of previous historians. Thoresby, indeed, communicated with Samuel Stansfield of Bradford, whom he considered the head of the family; and not fifteen years before the date of his letter to John Evelyn, James Stansfield of Stansfield, whose grandfather sold Stans- field Hall, was buried, on the 29th of July 1691. The descendants of the brothers and sisters of his father, Ashton Stansfield, who are mentioned in Heralds’ College pedigree No. i, must have been living at the time, and, no doubt, continue to this day; but the obscurity of the locality where they resided, then, would render it difficult to obtain the information necessary to form a pedigree.

Notes: Soiling, edge wear, folds and stains. See photos.
