British Exhibition in New York, 1960

Lettering: ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA F·D· M·G· FIVE SHILLINGS
Unabridged legend: Elizabeth II Dei Gratia Regina Fidei Defensatrix
Translation: Elizabeth the Second by the Grace of God Queen Defender of the Faith
Engraver: Mary Gillick
Reverse: The four quarterings of the Royal Arms each contained in a shield and arranged in saltire with, in the intervening spaces, a rose, a thistle, a sprig of shamrock and a leek; in the centre the Crown and in the base the date.
Lettering: 1960 EF CT
Engravers: Edgar Fuller, Cecil Thomas
Edge: Reeded
Mint: Royal Mint (Tower Hill), London, United Kingdom (1810-1975)
Comments: Although commemorating the British Exhibition in New York, USA (at which The Royal Mint had a stand), these coins were all struck at the Royal Mint, with 18,000 being sold at the exhibition. Crown-sized medals were struck at the mint stand.

The reverse design of this coin was that used for the Queen's coronation in 1953 with the date being changed and having a reeded edge rather than incuse lettering.

This coin was not included in demonetization legislation when decimalization was introduced in 1971. It has been confirmed by the Royal Mint that the coin remains legal tender, having been remonetized with a value of 25 pence.

The standard weight of these coins was 10/11 troy ounce (436.4 grains). Under the Coinage Act of 1946, the composition changed from .500 silver to .750 copper/.250 nickel but the weight remained unchanged.

The reverse design was also reused in 2014 to celebrate the first birthday of Prince George of Cambridge.

This coin was found in an old coin album…
Think of it ::: a coin is really a flat disc double sided sculpture and should be regarded as such. The artistry involved in creating such tiny wonders is awesome and the history is both humbling and fascinating.

We are selling off quite a few foreign coins. We know nothing about coins. We are not researching them. We are not grading them. Sold as pictured/as is. Good luck.

Comes in a small plastic coin holder.

Provenance:
This is just one item out of a huge stash of clothing, accessories, coins and household items from the Henry Frick estate; the Railroad Magnate. The woman who acquired them originally worked as a ladies maid out on the Frick’s Long Island estate. We purchased them directly from her great granddaughter, a lifelong Danbury resident, who had been their careful and respectful guardian for many years/decades.

Now out into the world once again!

More from this haul to be auctioned over the next weeks/months! Keep an eye on our upcoming auctions which will include everything from Mr. Frick’s collapsible top hat - to his gold wire-rimmed childhood spectacles, and much much more!

Notes: Most of the items offered here are antique, vintage or used. You should expect signs of wear consistent with age. Please regard all pictures carefully and ask us any questions prior to bidding. Measurements, if provided in our descriptions, are close approximations. We do our best to describe all items accurately. Every item starts at just $1. The bidder (you) determines the price. Written descriptions are based on the Auction Manager's opinion and should in no way be construed as a guarantee of any kind as to age, condition, authenticity, materials or any other feature of items being sold. That said (and this is the important part) All items are sold FINAL SALE/AS IS/NO RETURNS. We love questions - please ask! Enjoy the gamble and the hunt! :- ) Diana Clarke, Auction Manager
