Fabulous vintage pair of decorative mirrors designed by Alberto Ruiz-Vela and produced by Hoyne Industries, Inc., Chicago, 1960s–1970s, depicting male and female flamenco dancers, the images reverse-screened in black and salmon on mirror plates, in the original hand-carved and painted wooden frames, the mirrors measuring 30" x 15", the overall size (including frames) 36-1/4" x 21-1/4", the man's mirror with Ruiz-Vela's facsimile signature, the woman's mirror with the signature and "Hoyne Ind Inc." (Please note that the light blue backgrounds are a reflection of the sky; the mirrors are a true uncolored silver.)
A striking pair with plenty of over-the-top Hollywood Regency period flavor. Alberto Ruiz-Vela (1920 - 2006), born in Mexico City, studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in that city. He emigrated to the United States in 1952 and became best known for his paintings of bullfights, desert scenes, and Native American subjects.
