Item Description

Key to the Picture of Her Majesty's Jubilee Celebration in Westminster Abbey, After W. E. Lockhart, RSA. First edition. London: William Doig & Co., Publishers to the Queen, 1887. Gilt-stamped textured cloth covers measuring 5-5/8" x 5-3/8", the interior with folding diagram opening to approx. 31" x 21".

A line drawing providing a painstaking identification key to the hundreds of figures depicted in the massive painting of the ceremony commemorating Victoria's fiftieth year on the throne painted by William Ewart Lockhart (1846–1900), now in the Royal Collection. (An image of the painting itself is shown above for illustrative purposes; Victoria is standing at a podium just left of center). In addition to family members, British politicians, foreign royalty, and clergy, the painting depicts such notable cultural figures as Arthur Sullivan (of Gilbert & Sullivan fame), Robert Browning, Henry Irving, Ellen Terry. Uncommon.

Notes: Missing the original ribbon tie; a few isolated areas of light spotting (outside pictorial field); some tears and separations at folds/intersections (one of former with cellophane tape to reverse; the others with neat archival tissue reinforcement); otherwise good to very good overall
