Vintage silver gelatin photo of a large gathering of men with "Batty's Orchestra," probably at a company outing or similar function, Gloversville, New York, circa 1910s, the image 9-7/8" x 7-1/2", on the original heavy card mount with the photographer's imprint of Pursell, Gloversville, NY, measuring 14" x 12" overall.
The image depicts a group of what appears to be close to a hundred men and boys, among which are several with brass and wind instruments, one with a large bass drum clearly reading "Batty's Orchestra." Several men have cigarettes dangling from their mouths. A man seated in the front row at far left looks at and holds a wiggling beagle; a lone, stocky black man wearing a hat can be seen standing at far left. A November 1903 article from the Gloversville Daily Leader identifies Batty's Orchestra, directed by Fred Batty, as a "new one."
Notes: A bit of light wear and mild soiling to mount, otherwise near fine, attractive condition, with very good clarity and contrast
