Gladys Emerson Cook (American, 1899–1976): "Black Poodle with Red Collar," original pastel drawing on velour paper, circa 1930s–1940s, signed in black pastel at lower right, "Gladys Emerson Cook," 18" x 15".

Cook, who worked in Massachusetts and New York, was best known as a prolific illustrator of dogs and cats for books and advertisements. Though her work was widely reproduced as once-ubiquitous prints (which still remain popular), her original artwork, little of which she sold during her lifetime, is much less common.
