Antique stein from Bruneck, South Tyrol, Italy, probably made in Czechoslovakia or Bohemia, 19th century, ruby-flashed, engraved, and cut glass, of tapering paneled form with applied handle and ground bottom, the front featuring an elaborately engraved scene of Bruneck including castle, Rainkirche, and other buildings against a ruby background, pewter fittings, the lid with an inset porcelain disc hand-painted with flowers against a black background, 5-3/4" tall overall (1/2 liter capacity).
Bruneck, located in northern Italy near the Austrian border, was founded in the 13th century. Though ceded to Italy following World War I, it retains much of its Austrian heritage, and German is still the principal language spoken.
