I found this unusual antique open face pocket watch with a New Brunswick Canada made movement and a sterling silver case made in London. The case measures 43 millimeters in diameter and is 13.45 millimeters thick. It has a gold washed mechanical movement. The entire watch, including crystal and movement, weighs 60 grams.
The watch ticks a little when wound, but I do not know if it keeps time or how long it will run. I have not cleaned, polished, or had the watch serviced. As you can see the case has a pretty consistent dark patina. The dial is missing a fairly large chip, with a hairline to the right of it that arches from the 17 minute tick mark to the 24 minute tick mark between the 3 and 4 hour markers. The missing chip was repaired with putty a very long time ago. This is the way it came to me. The case is in very good condition.
The back of the case is engraved in a pattern of machined arches around a central circular cartouche that has never been personalized. The inside of the case is gold washed, as is the movement.
The dial is white porcelain over metal with black Roman numeral hour markers, a sub-set seconds dial at the 6 hour mark, and the number 7785 below the 12 hour mark.
The inside back of the case is marked with the Lion Passant, the Leopard Head, and the Date Mark, F, which is for 1841, and is numbered 7785. James Jackson II, was a registered sponsor in London in 1841, and his JJ Sponsor's mark is typically found on pocket watch cases.
The gold washed movement is engraved/marked Robinson & Thompson, St. John N.B., and is numbered 7785. Both the Robinson and Thompson families have long histories in St. John, producing some 17 or so children between them per generation. The Robinsons did have some merchants in descendants, but not much is known about the Thompsons that were not in government. It is very possible that a Robinson and a Thompson collaborated at some point.
