Soren Emil Carlsen, a Danish born artist, was best known for his still life paintings, some of which sold for over $80,000 at auction. During the first three decades of the twentieth century his works were included in numerous exhibitions where he won many awards. The painting here at auction was in the Chicago Exposition in 1890 but did not win an award. Carlsen died in New York in 1932.
Description of artwork: “The Dawn”, oil on heavy weave linen canvas in very heavy antique ornate gold leafed frame with gold leafed liner; 130 x 98 cm, signed and dated lower left “Emil Carlsen Paris '90
Painting was poorly restored that includes an unfeathered patch and visible under painting on the surface. Both could be reversed by a complete conservation with removal of the previous restoration, lining on a conservation panel, compensation of the voids and careful minimal in painting."
