About the Sale
Fairlight Estate Sales LLC is proud to present the Estate of Dave Schutz. Dave’s family has been in Estes Park since 1917, and this estate features over three generations of art from this prolific & well-known ...view moreartist family. Many of the pieces are available to the public for the first time, including historic memorabilia from Dave Stirling’s Bugscuffle Ranch situated in Rocky Mountain National Park.
Dave Schutz’ grandfather Dave Stirling came to Estes Park in 1917. Bugscuffle Ranch, nestled on what is now Rocky Mountain National Park Lands, was both an artist studio & gallery. During his time there, he was visited by Nobel Scientists, Government Officials, Actresses, Artists & Musicians including Les Paul and Lana Turner (to name a few)—all of whom took time to sign the walls of the Bugscuffle Ranch. We are offering architectural salvage from the Bugscuffle Ranch, including original signs adorning the studio.
While Dave Stirling is best known for this fabulous landscape paintings, we are also pleased to offer for the first time a selection of his abstract work. Most are done in the 1960’s, and many pieces are part of a multi-week series where he endeavored to make one painting per day. These are very much inspired by their time and place, and are an excellent example of mid-century abstract art.
Dave’s son Jack Stirling followed in his father’s footsteps, and produced incredible art and advertisements in the 1940’s. His style is entirely different from his father, and while he deeply admired his father’s work—he went his own artistic direction. He was a wrangler, and loved cowboy and western culture. Heavily influenced by the American West, his art is full of rodeo cowboys, horses, donkeys, and so much more. We are so pleased to offer a wonderful selection of art by Jack Stirling, who passed away at the young age of 29.
Dave Schutz inherited an artistic legacy and was a deeply creative artist, committed member of the Estes Park community, and a devoted family man. He worked at the Timberline Steakhouse for 30 years, and he loved to paint landscapes like his grandfather Dave Stirling. He also loved to do caricatures and cartoons. He was a beloved community member, and enoyed doing special projects for a lot of people & businesses in Estes Park. He was like Jack, he loved to advertise for people. He loved working at bars and restaurants because he liked to interact with members of the community, and we are honored to be offering his original works for sale in this auction.
Other notable artists in this auction include: Greig Steiner (another renowned Estes Park artist and community member), R.H. Palenske, and many more
There are many other historical artifacts from around the world and an impressive collection of books and vinyl records. Many of these artifacts were brought to Bugscuffle Ranch and were bartered or traded for Dave Stirling’s art work.
Enjoy & Happy Bidding,
