"The Entrance to the Round Tower" decorative porcelain plate by Royal Copenhagen.
Royal Copenhagen, Den Kongelige Porcelainsfabrik, was founded way back in 1775 under the patronage of the Royal House of Denmark. It is one of the oldest porcelain factories in the world, which is still in business. The tradition of Christmas plate began in 1908 with the dish "Mary and child", created by artist Christian Thomsen. Since then, year after year, the Royal Copenhagen has developed a new Christmas plate which has now become a strong Christmas tradition in homes all over the world.
The plate of this listing is the seventh in the series "Portraits of Old Copenhagen", produced by Royal Copenhagen, and is titled "The entrance to the Round Tower". The plates in this series were created by the artist Mads Stage. The entrance to the Round Tower in Copenhagen. The tower was built in 1637-1642 started by
Hans van Steenwinckel and finished by Lennart Blasius from Holland. The bricks were
ordered from Henrik van Dingklage in Emden, since the quality of danish bricks was too
poor. The tower was built together with The Trinitatis Church - the new university-
church, that was ready in 1656. The tower also includes a star-planetarium. The rim of the
plate, which surrounds the motifs in gold, are inspired by the cast iron fench that surrounds the top of The Round Tower. It was both a technical and artistic challenge for Royal Copenhagen to transfer the delicate and light watercolour drawings to the porcelain.
