Item Description

"Slag glass" is a collectors' name for opaque pressed glass with coloured streaks, usually white and/or cream streaks like this brown bugle made by George Davidson's in the North East of England in the 1890's. ... Slag glass is commonly found in purple, less common in blue and brown and green.
What is slag glass made of?
A Discarded History. Slag glass gets its name from slag, or the byproduct of steel production. When iron ore is smelted in that process, the remaining residue is a glass-like, often glossy material that takes on different colors depending on the minerals and elements present in the iron.
