Item Description

Ed Mell is an American artist known for both his paintings, posters, and bronze sculptures depicting cowboys, steers, and sunsets above the Grand Canyon. Mell’s planar paintings capture the solidity of light on rock formations with a unique style reminiscent of Georgia O’Keeffe. “Seeing the real thing has much more impact than a photographic representation of nature, so in order to duplicate nature, I like to push it a little further and bring back some of the impact that nature has in real life,” he said of his practice. Born in 1942 in Phoenix, AZ, he studied at the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles before working as an advertising illustrator in New York. He returned to Arizona in 1970, where he worked as a teacher on a Hopi reservation. The artist currently lives and works in Phoenix, AZ. Today, Mell's works are in the collections of the Phoenix Art Museum, the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Tucson Museum of Art, among others.
