Lot #97 of 102
Item Description

A fond depiction of the county, one of New England's most scenic, by a long-time resident and professional photographer. Here you will find virtually every distinct feature of Connecticut's northwest corner, from her lakes to her farms and her quintessential churches. From the last drive-in movie theater to world famous schools, seventeenth century homes to recently planted vineyards, the full color, limited text study is a testament to all that should be celebrated as a collection of images and thoughts.

Litchfield County remains very much a state of mind and of spirit as the Twentieth Century nears its end. Since the earliest emergence from the Ice Age, the many incursions by Man have brought on more evolution than revolution, more order than chaos. The geologic and zoologic beauty survives at virtually every turn of the trail; the mortal past hails us at every bend in the road. Once-vanished species such as the beaver and wild turkey are making a remarkable comeback. There is even talk of the return of the loon and the mountain lion, not to mention the bear. This book is a personal homage to the land - its inhabitants and guests - and the endurance of its charm. Disappointment is synonymous with such an undertaking. My guilt of omission is great. For each image captured, dozens still roam free. For each idea touched on, volumes could follow up. But such is the essence of this county: there is always so much more. And such is the essence of this refection upon the land: an aspiration to encourage care and preservation as well as an expression of joy and appreciation.

Henry Clay Childs called Litchfield County home for 45 years, man and boy. He both worked the land, tended the soil and built stone walls. He taught school, tended bar at the Mayflower and worked for the town road crew, after graduating from Yale. He divided his time between his friends in the woods and those on the local nine hole golf course, among other venues of diversion. He is most pleased at the results of this labor of love.
