Antique Egbert Van Heemskerck (1610-1680) Dutch Painting

Egbert van Heemskerck was an accomplished Haarlem Dutch Golden Age painter. An enigma and mysterious figure, his date of birth and death have been debated, as well as several events in his life. He is believed to have became a member of the Haarlem Guild of St. Luke in 1646 and has been reported to be a student of Pieter de Grebber. His often satirical paintings apparently landed him in serious trouble with King Charles II of England. Various paintings of his have been exhibited in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Louvre in Paris, the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Tournai, the Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle, the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, and the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge. This particular piece looks to be authentic, though unverified. It is set in a 20th c. frame, in fair vintage condition.
