Item Description

Beautifully engraved historic certificate from the Commercial Wharf Co. This historic document was printed by H. Morse Co. and has block borders a vignette of the commercial wharf with old sailing ships. There is also an embossed corporate seal with a sail ship in the center. This item is hand signed by the Company's President (William Pekins) and Secretary (E. Bacon).
The Commercial Wharf Company of Boston, Massachusetts. Founded in 1832, stock certificate of one share of stock awarded to The National Union Bank of Boston by Edward P. Lobey as collateral. Signed by Lobey on reverse with date and Notarized by William Perkins, President, and E. Bacon as Clerk. With a Washington orange 25 cent tax stamp on the transaction. Also, sealed with corporate seal. A few tears at edges and folds (see photos). A rare item.

The company was incorporated in 1832 and the Commercial Wharf was designed and built by Boston architect, Isaiah Rogers, from 1832-34. This act shall take effect upon its passage. Approved February 20, 1900. ACT TO AUTHORIZE THE COMMERCIAL WHARF COMPANY TO HOLD ADDITIONAL REAL ESTATE. Be it enacted, etc., as follows: SECTION 1. The Commercial Wharf Company, incorporated by chapter fifty-one of the acts of the year eighteen hundred and thirty-two, and its successors, are hereby authorized to acquire and hold in fee simple, leasehold or otherwise, any or all of the real estate, wharves, docks and other structures situated east of Atlantic avenue in Boston between the land, wharf and flats of the Lewis Wharf Corporation and the land, wharf and flats of the owners of a wharf, so-called, and further to acquire and hold all the rights, easements, privileges and appurtenances belonging to or which may be used in connection with such real estate, wharves, docks and other structures. SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon its passage. Approved February 20, 1900.
In 1832, the Legislature authorized the Commercial Wharf Company to construct a wharf and “any buildings, ․ docks, streets or passageways ․ according to their will and pleasure.” St. 1832, c. 51, § 2. Thereafter, a wharf, a five-story granite building, and “streets and passageways” to the east of the building were constructed. Both the building and the “streets and passageways” are located at the landward end of the wharf, but seaward of the historic low water mark, in an area constituting “Commonwealth tidelands” under G. L. c. 91, § 1.5.
