Terrific vintage folk art airplane, circa 1920s, hand-carved and painted wood, in the form of an early monoplane labeled "New York" and "New York to Chicago," the overall dimensions approx. 16-3/4" wide by 15-1/2" long by approx. 4" high.
Possibly made to commemorate the inauguration of an actual flight; the first New Yorkâto-Chicago flight took place in 1919, while airmail service on that route was established in 1926. While the development of the monoplane dates to the first decade of the century, the design became firmly established in the public consciousness with Charles Lindbergh's historic flight in 1927.
CONDITION: Lacking propeller, wheels, and rear stabilizer; one wing strut broken and partly missing; still a striking example worthy of the minor work needed to restore it to its original form.
