Twelve pieces of vintage china made for the New Ocean House Hotel, Swampscott, Massachusetts by Lamberton, circa 1930s, including six 9-1/2" dinner plates, two 8-1/4" salad plates, and two 6-1/2 bread plates, and two 5-1/4 bowls, each decorated at the rim with Classical swags and cartouches in light blue with gilt edge, each with manufacturer's marks, all but one additionally marked "Made Expressly for New Ocean House." Built in 1888 to replace an earlier hotel on the site that had burned down, the New Ocean House was one of the largest and most luxurious hotels on the North Shore, boasting a private beach, The New Ocean House had a private beach directly in front of the hotel, 25 twenty-five acres of lawns and gardens, butcher shop, fish market, barber shop, bakery, drug store, tailor, and laundry. Among the well-known guests who stayed there were Will Rogers, Harpo Marx, Lucille Ball, Helen Keller, Babe Ruth, John F. Kennedy, and William Jennings Bryan. The hotel burned to the ground in 1969.
CONDITION: Scattered rubs to decoration; surface wear/utensil marks from normal use; scattered hairlines and lines of crazing; generally good to very good overall.
